What Would I Ask For?

After Jesus explained to the disciples that the church should be called in Christ's name because it is Christ's church, he asked them a question:

"And it came to pass when Jesus had said these words, he spake unto his disciples, one by one, saying unto them: What is it that ye desire of me, after that I am gone to the Father?" (3 Nephi 28:1)

I imagined Jesus asking me this question and I wondered how I would respond. I love the answers the disciples had.

"And they all spake, save it were three, saying: We desire that after we have lived unto the age of man, that our ministry, wherein thou hast called us, may have an end, that we may speedily come unto thee in thy kingdom." (3 Nephi 28:2)

I think that's a very awesome thing to ask for. It is something I do indeed desire, to go speedily to Christ in His kingdom. Jesus even tells them it was a good thing that they asked for.

"Blessed are ye because ye desired this thing of me; therefore, after that ye are seventy and two years old ye shall come unto me in my kingdom; and with me ye shall find rest." (3 Nephi 28:3)

The other 3 disciples who wanted something else were hesitant to share what they wanted, but Jesus knew. They basically wanted to be able to live forever to share the gospel, and they were blessed with this. They have become known in LDS culture as The Three Nephites, and there are all sorts of stories about different ways in which they have ministered to people throughout the ages, including Mormon, who shared that he saw them and they ministered unto him.

It seems to me that these are worthy desires that the disciples had, and I wonder if my heart could be in the place where that's what I would ask for. At the end of the day, though, I feel like those options are both technically available to me, to some degree. I mean, I won't live forever, but I certainly could spend the rest of my days in the service of God, by serving others and ministering to them.

I can focus on just doing that with the life that I have.
