The Nephites and the Lamanites, both being extremely wicked, came up against each other to battle. The Nephites didn't seem to be learning this lesson:
"But, behold, the judgments of God will overtake the wicked; and it is by the wicked that the wicked are punished; for it is the wicked that stir up the hearts of the children of men unto bloodshed." (Mormon 4:5)
That seems to be all they cared about at this point: destroying the others. They kept boasting every time they won a small advantage. They kept sorrowing every time they surveyed the scene of carnage and bloodshed, with disastrous results:
"And now all these things had been done, and there had been thousands slain on both sides, both the Nephites and the Lamanites." (Mormon 4:9)
They were so wicked, that Mormon recorded:
"And there never had been so great wickedness among all the children of Lehi, nor even among all the house of Israel, according to the words of the Lord, as was among this people." (Mormon 4:12)
I mean, this isn't just Mormon's assessment. This was according to the words of the Lord. I mean, there had been some pretty bad wickedness in past times, especially considering this is all the children of Lehi, both the Nephites and the Lamanites. The Gadianton robbers, who conspired together to murder and steal to get gain. These people now were the most wicked. Crazy.
