Moroni takes over for his father, Mormon, to write a few things to describe a little bit of follow up to what Mormon had written. He even says he's running out of room to write much more.
He goes on to explain about the plates that Mormon used to write the abridged record from all the other records that have been written.
"the plates thereof are of no worth, because of the commandment of the Lord. For he truly saith that no one shall have them to get gain; but the record thereof is of great worth; and whoso shall bring it to light, him will the Lord bless. (Mormon 8:14)
So this is a seemingly contradictory statement. He says "the plates thereof are of no worth", immediately followed by "the record thereof is of great worth". He is specifically talking about the words on the plates being of great worth, whereas the plates themselves might seem to be of worth, meaning that they are "golden" and even if you consider the historical significance of a find like these plates. You might think you could sell them for money. Or even put them on display for everyone to see.
What Moroni is saying is that God wouldn't allow someone to use the plates to get gain. He wouldn't let them fall into the wrong hands, or even let them be discovered by someone who was not prepared to translate them and bring the record for to the whole earth.
"For the eternal purposes of the Lord shall roll on, until all his promises shall be fulfilled."(Mormon 8: 22)
God knows what He wants to have happen with His children, and He will make sure that is exactly what happens. What we need to learn to do better is to hear His words and trust His guidance. This is really what faith is, at the end of the day. It is trusting God. Following Him. Knowing that He has our best interests at heart, even if it leads us through rough patches. It is knowing that we can't be led astray, if we do what we know to be right and heed the modern prophets, and pray regularly, and trust in God.
