Jesus continued to teach the Nephites. They had a lot of marvelous experiences, including better gospel understanding straight from Christ:
"And now it came to pass that when Jesus had told these things he expounded them unto the multitude; and he did expound all things unto them, both great and small." (3 Nephi 26:1)
To expound means to present and explain (a theory or idea) systematically and in detail. This is what Jesus did. He helped people gain great understanding in many topics.
"And now there cannot be written in this book even a hundredth part of the things which Jesus did truly teach unto the people;" (3 Nephi 26:6)
Mormon, who is abridging this account is constrained to not write much of this account from the plates of Nephi, saying that whoever received the lesser part with faith will be blessed.
Christ taught and ministered to the people. Those words are in the scriptures. Teach and minister. To teach is to explain and help people understand. To minister is to help people and to understand people. This is what Jesus did throughout his mortal life.
Mormon further explains that after Christ ascended again into heaven, He visited them often and taught them and shared the sacrament with them.
"And it came to pass that the disciples whom Jesus had chosen began from that time forth to baptize and to teach as many as did come unto them; and as many as were baptized in the name of Jesus were filled with the Holy Ghost." (3 Nephi 26:17)
I like that the people, as soon as Christ taught them what to do, started doing it. They started baptizing with proper authority.
"And they taught, and did minister one to another;" (3 Nephi 26:19)
They also followed Christ's example, they taught and ministered. This is exactly what we are expected to do today, too. We spend time teaching and ministering. Sometimes those two things are one and the same. Whatever that means for us, we need to do it to follow the Savior's perfect example. This is really what the ministering program, and it's predecessors, ward teaching and home and visiting teaching, were really all about.
I hope I can follow this example of the Savior in my own life.
