Christ is teaching the Nephites about the house of Israel, of which they are a part. He is teaching about the day in the future when the words will be brought forth to the gentiles, and then to the house of Israel.
"But if they will repent and hearken unto my words, and harden not their hearts, I will establish my church among them, and they shall come in unto the covenant and be numbered among this the remnant of Jacob, unto whom I have given this land for their inheritance;" (3 Nephi 21:22)
When the gospel is taught to the gentiles, and there are some people that believe, the Church will be established among them. This gives them the authority and structure and understanding to make covenants and receive ordinances and things like that. Not only that, but they will "come into the covenant" and "be numbered among ... the remnant of Jacob". In other words, they will make covenants and be adopted into the house of Israel, which has a great number of blessings associated with it. It is God's covenant people.
"And then shall they assist my people that they may be gathered in, who are scattered upon all the face of the land, in unto the New Jerusalem." (3 Nephi 21:24)
Another thing that will happen when this event takes place is that the Lord's people will begin to be gathered in. Much of the house of Israel were scattered (10 of the 12 tribes of Israel were "lost"), and it has been prophesied for a long time that they would be gathered back together eventually. This is taking place now. With all the missionary efforts going on right now, throughout the world, the scattered tribes are being gathered.
It is neat to see this happen, especially knowing that it has been prophesied about for hundreds of years.
One thing for me to remember is that this is not just about getting people from foreign lands to be able to hear the gospel, but people all over. This means that I should be taking as many opportunities to share the gospel as I can. I can literally be part of the fulfillment of ancient prophecy.
