I think this is kind of cool to think about in retrospect.
"And now behold, I say unto you that when the Lord shall see fit, in his wisdom, that these sayings shall come unto the Gentiles according to his word, then ye may know that the covenant which the Father hath made with the children of Israel, concerning their restoration to the lands of their inheritance, is already beginning to be fulfilled." (3 Nephi 29:1)
"These sayings" in this verse is talking about the words in the Book of Mormon. The Gentiles are non-Jews, basically, so really when the Book of Mormon was brought forth, translated, and started being distributed, that was a sign that the covenant and prophecies made to the people, and recorded in the book, are already being fulfilled. There are a lot of things that have to happen in the "last days", but they had already started being fulfilled almost 200 years ago. The prophets of old saw our day and knew how things would go.
This comes with a warning:
"Yea, wo unto him that shall deny the revelations of the Lord, and that shall say the Lord no longer worketh by revelation, or by prophecy, or by gifts, or by tongues, or by healings, or by the power of the Holy Ghost!" (3 Nephi 29: 6)
I think it's a weird spot to be in to believe in an all-powerful God who used to talk to people and provide sacred words for the Bible, but no longer directly communicates with His children. I think to me, it makes much more sense that if God talked to people anciently, He talks to people now. In fact, while I have not had a visitation from Him or His angels, I have felt the Spirit testify truth to me. I have seen miracles occur. I know He lives and loves us and wants to help lead us back to Him.
