The Lamanites, egged on by the dissenters from the Nephites, came to battle the Nephites. The Nephites were outnumbered. The Lamanites decided to go to a different location to do battle with the Nephites.
"But it came to pass, as soon as they had departed into the wilderness Moroni sent spies into the wilderness to watch their camp; and Moroni, also, knowing of the prophecies of Alma, sent certain men unto him, desiring him that he should inquire of the Lord whither the armies of the Nephites should go to defend themselves against the Lamanites." (Alma 43: 23)
I think this is a true measure of how great a man Moroni was, even at a young age, and as captain of the Nephite army, he did what he could (sent spies) and then inquired of the Lord through Alma. I think this is awesome for a couple of reasons.
First, Moroni took action where he could. He was going to do everything he could to make sure he knew how best to defend the Nephites from being destroyed by the Lamanite army.
The other thing Moroni did was to rely on the Lord. He sent messengers to ask Alma where they should go, and he told them. The account goes on to describe how Moroni, using the information from Alma, went and was able to know where the Lamanites would be, and how to defend against them.
I think that this is really neat. I mean, leading the army was Moroni's job, for lack of a better word. From day to day, do I ask the Lord to help me to a better job at my job? Or school? Or my other day to day responsibilities? I know He will help me, just like He helped Moroni.
Moroni surrounds the Lamanites and stops the fighting. He offers them a deal that if they leave their weapons and promise to not come to war again, he would let them go. As part of his attempt to persuade them, he says the following:
"3 But now, ye behold that the Lord is with us; and ye behold that he has delivered you into our hands. And now I would that ye should understand that this is done unto us because of our religion and our faith in Christ. And now ye see that ye cannot destroy this our faith.
4 Now ye see that this is the true faith of God; yea, ye see that God will support, and keep, and preserve us, so long as we are faithful unto him, and unto our faith, and our religion; and never will the Lord suffer that we shall be destroyed except we should fall into transgression and deny our faith." (Alma 44:3-4)
Moroni is attributing their success in battle up to that point to the faith that he and his army had.
Moroni is a great example to me of how to have the faith to both ask for help and guidance, then go forward and take action. The Lord will support us in our actions as we act in faith.
