I read about the Nephites and what happened after they won the battle with the Lamanites, and it got me thinking:
“Behold, now it came to pass that the people of Nephi were exceedingly rejoiced, because the Lord had again delivered them out of the hands of their enemies; therefore they gave thanks unto the Lord their God; yea, and they did fast much and pray much, and they did worship God with exceedingly great joy.” (Alma 45:1)
The Nephites were so grateful for the help and strength the Lord gave them in battle that they did fast and pray much.
I’ve always thought of fasting as a mechanism for making a fervent request for a blessing. You need something really bad, or you want a blessing for someone else. These are times when you fast.
In reality, I think this is a great way to give thanks to God. By making the extra sacrifice of going without food or drink for a period of time, you are showing the Lord how grateful you really are.
I need to to this. I am very grateful for everything the Lord has given me, and I can and should do more to show it.
